“By the Sweat of Our Brows” is an annual award-winning program where descendants of the African
American community come together to honor their culture at Historic Brattonsville. This year’s program
expands to reflect on lifestyles in the century following Emancipation.
The traditional ‘Calling of the Names’ heralds the news of freedom for African Americans enslaved on the plantation at the time of Emancipation. Throughout the day, descendants of Brattonsville’s African American community gather on the lawn of the Homestead House to showcase family memorabilia, share stories and present educational programming. Living-history interpreters will be onsite to tell the stories of times past.
Margaret Parson-Willins will recount her involvement in the local Civil Rights movement. Wali Cathcart,
a former Professional League ballplayer, will recall how playing ball fostered a sense of community when
growing up in the then-segregated south. In the spirit of one of America’s pastimes, two ballgames will
take place on Saturday. Bring a glove and join in! The games are open to all ages (11 AM and 2 PM).
Kenny Liles Fish Fry will provide food available for purchase.
ADMISSION: Adults $8, Seniors $7, Youth $5, CHM members & ages 3 and under FREE.
* Participants who attend Saturday’s “By the Sweat of Our Brows” may sign-up for a special bus tour on
Sunday to Allison Creek Presbyterian Church (additional $4). Otherwise, general admission will get you on
the bus on Sunday. Descendants will be your tour guides and will continue sharing family stories and local
African American history during the ride. Tours of the African American cemetery on the church’s grounds
will take place. Hear what the church’s role was in the Reconstruction era, and enjoy live music by a jazz
ensemble.
