Historic Rock Hill  – Riding Through Rock Hill: A Retrospective on Cycling
The Historic White Home
258 East White Street, Rock Hill, SC

On July 19, 2014, Historic Rock Hill (HRH) will open an exhibit at the Historic White Home – celebrating the 75th anniversary of a historic ride from Rock Hill to the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing, NY, made by family member, James S. White II.

A local businessman, White was very active in the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored the goodwill ambassador trip through 10 states – over 800 miles – promoting “Rock Hill is a Good Town.”

In the same spirit, HRH will recreate this historic ride, with the help of White family descendant James S. White V.  White will ride a replica of “Old Betsy” over the course of two weeks beginning on July 19, 2014.  He will arrive in New York on July 29, 2014, and will document his journey via social media.

Many items of material culture will be on display at the White Home, including vintage and modern bicycles AND the original bike, “Old Betsy.”  The exhibit will also provide information on the current cycling landscape in Rock Hill, which includes the Giordana Velodrome at the Rock Hill Outdoor Center and mountain biking trails, among others.
