The Southern Revolutionary War Institute Presents a New Symposium – “The King’s Own Patriots: Loyalists and Provincials in the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution.”
The identities, motivations and experiences of some of the thousands of men and women who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution will be examined. In particular, this conference will focus on loyalists in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, including not only men and European-Americans but also women and African-Americans. Presentations include papers on loyalist women, loyalists in the Carolina and Georgia backcountry, loyalists at the battles of Ramsour’s Mill, North Carolina and Kings Mountain, South Carolina, and provincial army units composed of loyalists from both southern and northern colonies who served as regular troops in the British army. The symposium will also consider the postwar experiences of many of the loyalists who were forced to flee their homes in the United States and resettle in other parts of the British Empire.
Registration for the symposium is $50.00 and includes lunch and a tour of the newly renovated Historical Center and Southern Revolutionary War Institute adjacent to the McCelvey Center.
Symposium attendees will also receive complimentary admission to Historic Brattonsville on Sunday, October 5, for a tour of the recently opened Williamson’s Plantation/Huck’s Defeat battlefield trail. See artifacts, original artwork, and a 15-minute historical documentary about the battle.
