The Fort Mill men of Company G, 118th Infantry, 30th Division, were among those U.S. soldiers who saw the most action in World War I. Along with the other York County National Guard Company that made up the old 1st S.C. Infantry, Company G was called into services days after the U.S. declared war in April 1917. Their regiment, the 118th Infantry, was the first in the 30th Division to arrive in France and the first to attack the “impregnable” Hindenburg Line trench system on September 27, 1918.
