An award-winning African American Program, “By the Sweat of Our Brows,” is a one day event that centers on the lives of African Americans who lived in the Brattonsville community in the 1800s.

On September 13th, historic interpreters will depict domestic routines in the fields, cabins, and kitchens to represent an authentic experience of the lives of the once enslaved. In addition, five powerful theatrical performances will be featured that will accurately portray the way of life during the Reconstruction Era.

“By the Sweat of Our Brows” is an essential part of the living history programming at Historic Brattonsville and offers a deeper interpretation of slavery. The program’s  narrative includes both scholarly research and the collective memories of descendants of Bratton slaves.

Local musical ensemble, Mellogroove, will fill the air and “satisfy the need for authentic Soul Music.”  Clarissa Lynch, author of “One Hearth, One Pot: For Love of Food and History” and blogger of “The Crooked Spoon,” will be giving cooking demonstrations. Mozelle Robinson will be telling stories by the grape arbor behind the Big House. Other ongoing activities include marble making, brick making, historic toys and games “Long Dawgs” will be selling food, and artisans will be selling their wares. Two bus tours are scheduled to take visitors to Hermon Presbyterian Church and revisit the Friendship Nine.
