The Culture & Heritage Museums (CHM) of York County – Historic Brattonsville:
Historically-dressed interpreters will portray early settlers in a traditional family affair of processing and preserving a whole hog. Learn why they valued the hog for its food value and utilitarian by-products. A sundry of pork-processing activities will occur during the day: butchering, rendering lard, making soap, preservation, and cooking demonstrations. Observe the preparation of chitterlings, sausage and bacon.
Jim Bordwine, of Saltville, Virginia, will demonstrate and discuss how our ancestors obtained salt, a vital ingredient for food preservation.
Food from Gardeners BBQ of York County will be available for purchase.
Admission: Adult, $6; Senior, $5; Youth ages 4-17, $3; CHM members and children 3 and under are admitted FREE.
